"It’s just fantastic the difference you can make to other people"

Abby has chosen a new career path by joining the team at Vivo Care Choices – and she couldn’t be happier with the decision she made.

Vivo, an in-house service at Cheshire West and Chester Council, provides a range of care and support to people with learning disabilities and autism and older people.

After being made redundant from a role in retail, Abby was looking for something new and decided to work in Vivo’s learning disability day services, supporting people out and about in the community.

She said: “There are so many good parts of my job and I love the variety of it because no two days are the same.

“I was made redundant so I decided to apply for the Support Worker role and it’s just fantastic the difference you can make to other people.

“It’s nice being in the community and joining in with activities alongside the general public.

“I always say to friends and family that they should come and do my job because they’d be great at it.”

Abby, along with a number of other staff, have been a key part of the Makaton Choir at St John’s in Winsford.

The Makaton Choir has been learning a range of songs in Makaton and performing at different events, such as Storyhouse’s Kaleidoscope Festival, Vivo’s Employee Awards and a Christmas light switch-on.

Abby added: “It all come from a Makaton pop session we did in our service and everyone loved it.

“It’s spiralled from there really and we have such a mixed group, with people aged 19 or 20 and the oldest member in her 60s.

“I think it’s shown other people what you can achieve and that everyone can learn new skills and enjoy them.

“We’ve even been working with a songwriter to create our very own bespoke song, which is called Our Story.

“It’s been amazing to see how everyone in the group has developed and it’s such a rewarding part of the job.”
